Research
Germinating Redwood Seeds doesn't appear to be an easy task. I've been reading various articles on the web and despite reading a lot of conflicting information most sites seem to suggest soaking the seeds and "stratification". Stratification appears to be keeping the seeds in a cold environment (refrigerated) for a period of time to allow the release of some chemicals that will encourage germination when warm weather comes.
From the sites I have come across so far, trees.martinsvillenj.com seems to contain the most thorough investigation into the best procedures for germinating the seeds successfully.
I'll probably use some of the techniques presented in the "best practice" page on the site (gsseedsummary.htm), including stratifying the seeds in water for up to 4 weeks.
The Seeds arrived
The Giant Redwood seeds were waiting in the post at the office today after the bank holiday weekend. The pack looks like it contains about 60 seeds. I won't get an opportunity to do anything with them this evening.
The seeds look healthy as far as I can tell.
I ordered Giant Redwood Seeds
On a whim, I ordered a pack of 50 Giant Redwood seeds (sequoiadendron gigantea) through Amazon today. They were £3.95STG which worked out at about €4.62.
There was only one review of the product on the website which rated it as 1 star from 5 because not one of his seeds germinated. It seems that most people agree that you only get a very small success rate with germinating the seeds so that one review doesn't necessarily mean that these seeds are inferior to any others.
